The Cape Verde national football team stunned the world by drawing with Spain in their World Cup 2026 debut. The team made history by holding the European champions to a goalless draw in their first-ever World Cup match. For most people, this Spain-Cape Verde match was just another World Cup game. The current European champions against a team making their World Cup debut, a duel that was expected to be highly unbalanced and with a almost inevitable winner. José Maria Neves, the leader of the small island nation, explained that this is one of the great moments in the life of a nation. Cape Verde delivered and played with the weapons they had: dedication and solidarity among all, caution and intelligence. With four players with experience in Portuguese football in the starting lineup - Vozinha, Sidny Lopes Cabral, Jovane Cabral, and Dailon Livramento – Cape Verde kept the danger away from their goal for almost the entire first half. The first shot on goal by Spain came only in the 15th minute, courtesy of Pedri. Cape Verde remained firm and without major problems in front of their goal until the 38th minute. Only then did they experience a real scare, after a dismarking on the left flank by Cucurella that allowed the new Real Madrid signing to serve Ferran in the heart of the area, who sent the ball to the bar. Shortly after, already close to the interval, another scare for the Cape Verdeans, again with Cucurella creating and Ferran finishing, and once again with Vozinha shining, with another excellent save. The break would come soon after and half the job was done. The debutant Cape Verde remained alive and had not suffered too much against one of the best teams in the world. And Cape Verde delivered. Against a team full of stars and favorite to win the World Cup title, the “blue sharks” played with the weapons they had: dedication and solidarity among all, caution and intelligence. Dedication and solidarity that were seen in the way the Cape Verdean players covered their area and made doubles to their colleagues whenever one was overtaken; caution because Cape Verde knew the level of their opponent and, therefore, adopted a clearly defensive posture, playing in expectation and exploration of a quick exit to the attack that could work; intelligence because Bubista knew that without Yamal and without Nico Williams, Spain would be without weapons to attack the flanks and would insist on the interior game. And it was to defend the central zone that the Cape Verdeans dedicated themselves body and soul, nullifying a large part of the Spanish offensive game. With the help of Vozinha, Sidny Lopes Cabral, Jovane Cabral, and Dailon Livramento, Cape Verde managed to keep Spain away from their goal and stun the world with a goalless draw.
