Cape Verde and the international window
The Cape Verde national team may return to the pitch in October for a new international challenge, this time against India. The match is tentatively scheduled for October 6, 2026, according to the Indian newspaper India Today. No official confirmation from the federations has yet been issued.
Post-World Cup: Cape Verde’s opportunity
The friendly comes just weeks after Cape Verde’s historic participation in the 2026 World Cup. The Blue Sharks attracted worldwide attention with a campaign that included a goalless draw against Spain, the eventual world champions, and a competitive match against Argentina in the round of 16, which ended only in extra time.
For Cape Verde, the potential friendly against India would be another chance to keep the national team competitive after its unprecedented appearance in a World Cup final stage.
India prepares for Brazil
India has already confirmed one of the biggest matches in its recent history: the clash with Brazil, set for October 3, at the Salt Lake Stadium in Calcutta. The Indian Football Federation (AIFF) decided to withdraw the team from the first edition of the FIFA ASEAN Cup to play Brazil and use the international window to arrange other friendlies. Cape Verde and Iran have emerged as possible opponents for India.
Cities under consideration
According to India Today, Calcutta and Kochi are the two cities being considered to host the India-Cape Verde match. The Salt Lake Stadium in Calcutta and the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi are among the venues under review. The decision may also depend on logistics related to the India-Brazil game. A delegation of five members of the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) recently visited Calcutta to inspect the Salt Lake Stadium and assess stadium and hospitality conditions before the October 3 match.
What to expect
If the match with Cape Verde is confirmed for October 6, India could face two high-level international sides with only three days between games. The potential invitation to play Cape Verde comes at a time when the Cape Verdean team has gained greater international exposure after its 2026 World Cup participation. The Blue Sharks’ campaign put the country at the centre of global football attention and made Cape Verde a particularly interesting opponent for teams looking to test themselves against a top-tier African side.
Should it be officialised, the October 6 encounter will be another chance for Cape Verde to capitalise on the moment created by its historic World Cup run and continue to test itself against opponents from different regions of world football.
For now, however, the game remains unconfirmed officially.
