Benfica Foundation introduces 'Walking Football' in Cape Verde
The Benfica Foundation introduced 'Walking Football' in Cape Verde yesterday, 15 July, a modality adapted to promote active aging and social inclusion. The presentation took place after a visit to the Achada Santo António-Brasil Community Center, renovated as part of the partnership between the Benfica Foundation and the Dret Foundation.
'Walking Football' is a modality that adapts the traditional rules of football to the abilities of the elderly population, promoting physical activity, health, and social inclusion. Benfica Foundation Executive Director Jorge Miranda explained that the modality eliminates the main factors that prevent many elderly people from engaging in sports.
"'Walking Football' is walking football. You can't run, the field is smaller, and the rules remove the traumatic part of the game. So, everyone can participate, recover social interaction, and feel active again," said Jorge Miranda.
The official also highlighted that the initiative aims to combat the isolation of the elderly population, encourage mobility, and strengthen community ties through an activity that can involve different generations, such as grandparents and grandchildren.
In his perspective, the strong connection of Cape Verdeans to football may facilitate the adoption of 'Walking Football,' contributing to the promotion of health, community participation, and active aging in the country.
